Electric and Motorised Skylight Blinds in London
Electric skylight blinds · London
Out of reach
should not mean out of control.
Electric skylight blinds shade roof glazing from heat, glare and UV, and open and close at the touch of a button when the glass is overhead.
KOZA Projects supplies and fits skylight and roof-light blinds for homes and projects across London, from tensioned systems for rooflights and glazed extensions to Duette blinds for roof windows and shaped glazing. Family-run and established in 2005, we are a Somfy Expert.
For how the blind itself is built, which fabrics suit and where tensioned systems are used, see our page on skylight blinds and roof lantern blinds. This page covers electric operation, control and what to plan.
Electric skylight blinds
Why electric
Controlled from the room, not from a ladder
A skylight blind sits overhead, usually beyond easy reach. Most are motorised for that reason, so the blind is controlled from the room rather than from a pole or steps.
Electric operation means the blind can follow the light through the day. Where there is a home automation system, skylight blinds can be included in it, and we coordinate with your AV integrator and electrician and with control systems such as Lutron, Crestron and KNX.
Operated by
- Hand-held remote

Which blinds
Electric operation on each skylight blind type
We supply and install skylight blinds from a range of brands, including Luxaflex, Umbra and Silent Gliss. Most tensioned skylight blind systems are electric, and the system itself is described on our skylight blinds page.
For roof windows, gables and other shaped glazing, Luxaflex Duette blinds can be motorised too. We have fitted motorised Duette blinds to gable windows in London.
We specify the motor and control and coordinate with your electrician or AV integrator, so power is in the right place before the ceiling is closed.

Plan early
What to plan before the ceiling is closed
Power to the roof light, mains or battery
Access to reach and service the blind
Fixing points around the glazing
Frame and glazing checked at survey
The control method, from remote to home system
Power and fixing points are best planned before the ceiling is finished, so involve us early. On our Homerton gable window project, a dedicated access point was built in so maintenance can be carried out with minimal effort.

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Can skylight blinds be electric?
Yes. Most skylight blinds are motorised because the window is out of reach. They are controlled by remote, app or home automation system.
Does an electric skylight blind need wiring?
Not always. Mains-powered motors are wired by an electrician, ideally before the ceiling is closed. Battery motors need no wiring and are recharged in place. Which suits a particular roof light is confirmed at the survey.
Can electric skylight blinds be linked to a smart home system?
Yes. Skylight blinds can be controlled by app or home automation system, and we coordinate with your AV integrator and electrician where there is one, and with control systems such as Lutron, Crestron and KNX. See our motorised and smart shading page.
Can an electric skylight blind close automatically?
On some ranges of skylight blinds, yes. A sun sensor and hub can close the blinds automatically when the sun is strongest, so the room is shaded without anyone having to be there. Not every range offers this, so we confirm what is available for your blind when we specify it. Where a blackout fabric is used, the blind must still be operated so that air can circulate, because hot air trapped between the blind and the glazing on extremely hot days can make the glass expand and crack. See our skylight blinds page.
Who needs to be involved in an electric skylight blind?
Your electrician for mains power, and your AV integrator if the blind is to be part of a home automation system. We specify the motor and control and coordinate with them, so power and access are agreed before the ceiling is closed.
Can electric blinds be fitted to roof windows and gable windows?
Yes. Duette blinds can be motorised for roof windows, gables and other shaped glazing, and we have fitted motorised Duette blinds to gable windows in London. For the blind systems themselves, see our skylight blinds page.
Can I see an electric blind working before I order?
You can see motorised systems and home automations working in our Shoreditch showroom, by appointment, to get a feel for how electric operation behaves. Book a showroom visit.
